Dental implants are becoming more and more popular among men and women all over the United States. In truth, they are considered to be the gold-standard for tooth replacement. This is why so many people from the area visit our periodontists every year to learn more about how dental implants can restore their oral function and improve the appearance of their smile.
Because so many people are most familiar with tooth-replacement options of the past like dentures and bridges, many patients are not quite sure exactly how dental implants work. Dr. Karbakhsch and Dr. Katafuchi believe in educating every patient they see on the ins and outs of their chosen procedure, and understanding how dental implants work is the foundation for a successful treatment.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are small titanium screws that act as artificial tooth roots for loose or missing teeth. They are a fixed solution for tooth-replacement because our periodontists surgically implant them directly into the jawbone. As they heal, the implants will form a bond with the jawbone to become stable. This bond means that your dental implants will likely never need to be replaced, as long as they are cared for properly.
Each dental implant can support one or more artificial crowns, or several implants can work together to support an entire arch or mouthful of teeth. This tooth replacement solution allows patients an alternative to crown caps, dental bridges, and even dentures. Dental implants protect surrounding teeth, are durable, look like natural teeth, and allow you to regain the benefits of eating, drinking, and speaking without fear.
Dental Implant Surgery
At MK Periodontics and Implants, our periodontists customize every dental implant surgery to meet the specific needs of each individual patient. They understand that you want to have your smile back as soon as possible, which is why Dr. Karbakhsch or Dr. Katafuchi may be able to perform your first procedure of the dental implant process on the same day as your initial appointment!
Before our doctors begin your surgery, you will receive oral or IV sedation so you can rest throughout the procedure. Once you are comfortable, your doctor will numb the area or areas to be treated with a local anesthetic. If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be removed, our doctors will remove it. After the area has been prepared, Dr. Karbakhsch or Dr. Katafuchi will create a tiny incision in the gum line and carefully insert the dental implant.
After your dental implant or implants have been placed, our periodontists will then attach an abutment on top. This piece will allow the gum tissue to heal properly and will eventually hold your permanent dental crowns in place. While you wait for your permanent crowns, our doctors will fit you with a temporary prosthesis so your oral function and aesthetics will remain intact.
After your dental implants have completely healed and fused to your jawbone, your doctor will complete your treatment by attaching your crowns to your implants. At this point, you will be free to enjoy life to the fullest again!
